getting busy. i'll have the top traffic trouble spots in a few minutes. thank you. good morning, everyone. it's tuesday, it's december the 4th. i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm michelle griego. time now 6:00. new this morning firefighters battled a massive house fire in petaluma overnight. crews were called out just after 3:30 this morning to sadler lane and take a look. those flames completely destroyed the home. officials say the home is occupied but no one was home at the time. the cause is still under investigation. there's no indication to make the fire suspicious. but pretty impressive flames. >> what a fire. my gosh. >> the big muni mess has stranded thousands of passengers is over at this hour. >> the transit system is recovering from a power outage and an accident with some serious injuries, as well. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is in san francisco where power in the subway is back on at this hour. good morning. >> reporter: that's good news for morning commuters.

again there's basically sorted out a bit of the mess. all muni lines are back on track. muni told us that this was caused by a power outage they had last night. the electrical problem happened as commuters were headed home. there was a blown transformer on van ness. >> it was damaged from water. >> computers were down in the subway. we waited and they never tell you how long it's going to be. >> reporter: the whole restoration is ahead of schedule. originally the n and j lines were supposed to be delayed this morning but when we spoke to a muni spokesman on the phone they say crews restored power about 1:30 this morning and find the electrical short in order to get all lines back and running before the big commute. now, they also had a lot more on their hands last night at church and market. muni dealt with another major problem. a woman in a wheelchair was hit by the f market line and taken

to the hospital with life- threatening injuries. we don't know her condition this morning. police are investigating. as for what caused that electrical problem last night, originally muni thought it had something to do with storm damage. but this morning they say it might be too soon to call it that and they will be investigating today. live in san francisco, cate caugiran, cbs 5. today is the day the muni board of directors decides whether to give free lied to low income youth. the proposal is to use some money in the regional transit authority for five-month pilot program next year. san francisco supervisors are already behind the proposal. and at 6:03, let's check weather. >> did you enjoy the break in the stormy weather? >> yes. >> one day. >> one day. now we're back to cloudy skies and it looks like we could see some light sprinkles and light showers across the north bay throughout the day today. hi-def doppler is pick up on some of that moisture most of that off the coastline but there's a chance we could see a

couple of light sprinkles coming our way. otherwise it is mostly cloudy and dry right now around the bay area. the temperatures fairly mild mainly into the 50s concord sneaking down to 49 degrees. clouds stream overhead. not a good trigger to squeeze out the moisture. rain likely tonight and tomorrow. temperatures in the 60s. more rain on the way. one to two inches. >> work is ongoing to fix a hole in lafayette. a portion of mountain view drive caved in during the storm last weekend. there will be months of reconstruction. cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington is in lafayette. >> reporter: this is not going

to be an easy fix so people can expect the work to continue until late spring or early summer. engineers are coming up with a plan for the next storm. construction crews are getting to work. the sinkhole opened when debris caused the culvert at the lafayette creek to clog. water overran the street and then the street crumbled. since then, part of the road is closed while pg&e, east bay m.u.d., sanitation contractors and engineers have been on scene to fix it and restore utilities. some water lines were damaged in the collapse. joyce lives steps away from the sinkhole. her yard looks into the trench and exposed pipe. >> all our lives is just -- we

have just this house. and everything you worry about it. >> reporter: a handful of homes were without water service while east bay m.u.d. repaired two lines. there are detours to get around the sipping hole but as you saw that woman joyce who lives just feet away from the sinkhole, we spoke with her son yesterday and the hole is practically in their front yard, you can see this is emotional for some people mo who live on the street and don't know how to deal with the hole also see attention it's getting. joggers are heading over to take a look. some people say the noise has been very loud. as i said earlier this work will continue for months. in lafayette, elissa harrington, cbs 5. >> the storm washed out a road in the santa cruz mountains. vine hill road off highway 17 in scotts valley will be closed indefinitely. crews don't know how long it

south bay heading into san jose. lawrence expressway we have reports of traffic control at that intersection. heading a-longated eight traffic clear toward the maze, southbound to oakland no delays into hayward and fremont actually 880 a nice ride so far. back to you. >> thank you. >> more details about the arrest of a man accused of attacking an autistic girl in oakland. the 16-year-old girl walked away from the fred finch youth center tuesday. federal law prevents staff members from stopping her but they followed her until she got in the area of the fruitvale bart station where she disappeared. she wasn't seen again for two days when a drive found her aboard a bus in san francisco. could she had bruising around the neck where the suspect tried to strangle my daughter.

>> the suspect was 36 and was arrested yesterday. alameda county prosecutors could charge him today. police are looking for a man who lobbed a walgreens of narcotics in palo alto. a surveillance camera captured images of the suspect. police say he asked for oxycontin and showed a gun. the suspect is a white man in his 20s about 6 feet tall with short cropped hair. he wore a white hat with a seattle seahawks logo on it. plans to reduce firefighting service will be the focus of a meeting at the contra costa county fire protection district. among the actions being considered closing several fire stations. the district has to cut back after measure q failed to get a two-thirds majority. it was for a parcel tax to fund fire services. the san francisco board of supervisors is expected to give

final approval today to ban public nudity. protestors stripped at san francisco city hall last month when supervisors gave preliminary approval to the ban. they plan to do so today. >> reporter: president obama is keeping a close eye on a week lon strike at two southern california ports. 800 members at the port of los angeles and long beach have been working without a contract for two years. the clerks don't handle cargo but dock workers are refusing to cross picket lines forcing a shutdown of those terminals. the strike is costing the u.s. up to $1 billion a day and it could delay shipments of holiday gift merchandise. president obama will host a group of governors today to talk about the upcoming "fiscal cliff." this is after they rejected a count proposal from congressional republicans. that plan promises to trim $2.2 trillion over 10 years and includes $900 billion in entitlement cuts, two-thirds of

video shows a man apparently ling two cases of check out this near beer brawl a south carolina convenience store. surveillance video showing a man apparently stealing two cases of beer from a gas station and you can see the store clerk didn't like that. he goes running out after the man. they try to get it back. they struggle. the beer spills. and at one point they raise their fists ready to go at it. police have not caught anyone and, yes, sadly the beer was spilled. ruined. >> ruined. comedian katt williams can't seam to stay out of trouble. yesterday he was thrown out of a seattle hotel after a bar fight. today he is wanted for misdemeanor battery. this video shows him punching a security guard in sacramento last month. the 19-year-old guard said it started with williams giving him a hard time for selling his

personal motorcycle helmet and then it got physical. >> he approached me and just the argument got escalated and he hit me. he is worth millions, he just cost me my job, that's upsetting. >> the security guard says he was fired without explanation when the video hit youtube. >> he has had a tough month. >> i know. he is in trouble. we have a little trouble with muni. they solved one problem and have another now, right? >> yeah. we are showing the equipment problems and it's affecting some muni cable car lines. i'll have that in a second. also slow at the bay bridge toll plaza. so busy either way you look at it this morning. bay bridge backed up metering lights on almost to 880. slow up the incline, as well. now if you are planning on taking muni this morning we have some earlier troubles on the n-judah line that's now been wrapped up but cable car lines powell hide street cable car line is disrupted due to equipment problems.

bus bridges are in place from beach and hyde to washington and powell. plan for that if you take the powell-hyde line. capitol corridor train number 520 out of oakland up to 20 minutes late this morning. so getting busy. elsewhere as you work your way through the altamont pass one of our hot spots no accidents but it's slow as you work your way westbound. altamont pass towards livermore, and towards 680. eastbound some slight delays as you work your way through livermore, as well. 26 minutes now from the altamont pass to 680. looks like antioch loaded up, as well. one of our hot spots westbound 4 slow and go through antioch gets better once you hit the eastshore freeway. a closure on one-way traffic control happening at devil's slide today. we have some video of the area. one-way traffic will be in effect between linda mar and the northport tal bridge area of devil's slide.

parts of highway one will be closed to prepare for the next storm. that's 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. folks around the bay area today we have some more rain coming in our direction a lot of cloud outside not much in the way of rainfall just yet. let's check our high-def doppler radar. it's picking up on some moisture. you can see north of the golden gate bridge toward the north bay we could see some light sprinkles there throughout the day today. not a whole lot of energy to trigger any rain just yet but that will likely change especially overnight into tonight. cloudy skies keeping the temperatures fairly mild. 52 degrees in san jose. 55 in san francisco. and 50 degrees in livermore. i think as we head throughout the day today a lot of clouds outside. temperatures fairly mild then rain developing tonight. and then spreading south overnight tonight. showers into tomorrow, as well. so let's look at the storm system. not well organized. a cold front to the north though is going to drop down on the back side of this and that should be enough to get the rain going overnight. but in the meantime a couple of sprinkles out there.

the rain returning though this evening in the north bay and spreading to the south through the night. so we'll see if we can time it out. chance of light showers throughout the day today. north of the golden gate bridge . then midnight you will see the cold front slowly working throughout the rest of the bay area to tomorrow morning so a bit of a wet commute early on tomorrow. and then it moves on by. the showers will end tomorrow afternoon. then we dry out on thursday and friday. we are looking good. sailing in toward the weekend. temperatures for today not bad at all. you will still see some dry temperatures and 60s into the south bay. 63 san jose, 62 palo alto. north bay could get wet today light sprinkles and drizzle so watch out for that. 60s there. about 62 san francisco. 61 daly city. next couple of days going to keep the weather unsettled and possibly wet. then looks like we dry outcome thursday and friday. although we get a soaker tonight we are not expecting

december 4. i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. it is 6:32. a huge pot bust at a home in east san jose. this morning neighbors reported a burglary happening at a home on the 1300 block of sandalwood court. when police got there they found the front door open. they entered the home and discovered an elaborate grow house there. we have live pictures of the house here. in fact, officers say there was no furniture inside the home at all just about 300 pot plants with a street value of $125,000. and because of all the chemicals inside the home, they called the fire department. no word on who owns the home. we'll bring you more information as soon as we get it. also firefighters have contained a massive house fire at petaluma this morning. crews were called out just after 3:30 this morning. flames completely destroyed this home. unbelievable video. the home is occupied. but no one was home at the time. the cause is still under

investigation. but there's no indication to make the fire suspicious. but a complete mess up in petaluma. and another big problem we're following this morning is muni and i guess new problems, gianna, are causing more delays. >> yes. unfortunately muni can't win. reports of a cable car line that's affected due toon equipment problem so this is going to affect the powell-hyde cable car line. bus bridges are in place from beach and hyde to washington and powell. no word on how long this will be affected but again, do plan for those delays this morning. the rest of muni is on time. bart, rest of mass transit also looking good except capitol corridor. now, we are getting reports of capitol corridor delays. they canceled train number 520 due to equipment problems is he they are replacing it with train 522. if you usually use 520, you will use 522, with a 15- to 20- minute delay. >> thank you. meanwhile, muni's big mess from last night's commute just cleared out about an hour ago.

the transit system is operating normally now along market street and that's where cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran i to explain the issue that stranded thousands of muni passengers. >> reporter: at least muni can win this one. muni trains are back on track and i was told by a muni spokesman it was ahead of schedule because crews worked well into the night trying to restore power to underground transit stations all trains were stopped just before 6:00 last night. muni says the meltdown was thanks to a blown transformer. >> apparently, it was damaged with water damage from yesterday. >> computers were down in the subway. >> we waited and waited and, of course, they never tell you how long it's going to be. >> reporter: now, muni put in modified service for lines n and j. originally both of those lines were supposed to be rerouted as workers tried to find the short in the electrical system. but muni restored power at 1:30 a.m.

and a few hours later they were able to pinpoint the cause just in time for the commute. muni did have a lot on its hands yesterday. we're still unsure about a wheelchair-bound woman's condition this morning. she suffered life-threatening injuries after she was hit by an f market train at church and market. and police are visiting how this happened. now, in terms of that electrical problem they had yesterday, originally muni spokespeople said they thought it had something to do with storm damage but now say it's too early to say. they will be looking into it throughout the day. live in san francisco, cate caugiran, cbs 5. >> thank you. all right. weather, song remains the same. we have one day of sunshine and today the rain is acomin' back, right, lawrence? >> yeah. but the good news is it was probably just enough to let the waters recede so we went have to worry about flooding. clouds in the skies already this morning, mostly cloudy everywhere. and yes, we're starting to see a couple of raindrops outside well to the north those you can see some of that train of

lines that were damaged in the washout. water, gas and sewer lines running under the pavement were all damaged and now officials say the repairs won't be easy and won't be fast. >> bottom line is that there's going to be a hole in the ground here for a long time. and mountain view drive is going to be closed. >> city officials believe debris blocked a drainage culvert under mountain view drive about 8:30 sunday morning causing water to overrun the road and wash it way. some residents and drivers are still discovering the open trenches and exposed pipes for the first time. it's massive oakland police will give us new details today about the man arrested for attack an autistic girl. the 16-year-old victim walked away from a group home for the developmentally disabled a week ago. staff members saw her go but federal law prevents them from stopping her. they followed the girl but lost her near the fruitvale bart

station. two days later, she was found aboard a bus in san francisco. >> the bus driver had noticed that she had been beaten and was concerned about her. he could city that she was bruised and -- he could see that she was bruised and distraught and called 911. >> the suspect arrested yesterday is 36. alameda county prosecutors could file charges against him today a judge has denied an oakland landlord's request to evict the nation's largest medical marijuana club. the eviction of the harborside dispensary is based on the grounds that it violates federal law. but the alameda county superior court judge said the landlord can't use that reason because that court's jurisdiction only covers state law. a federal court hearing on the case is planned later this month. in a few hours civil rights advocates plan to release evidence they say shows plans for a surveillance drone in alameda county. the aclu says the sheriff's office plans to use a drone for surveillance and intelligence gathering that contradicts earlier claims that it would

country. is mother nature on a rampage? >> sure seems like it. finally calming down around the bay area but that's about to change. we'll see some rain moving back into the bay area. in fact, we are seeing couple of scattered light showers in parts of the north bay this morning. you see that train of moisture a little further to the north as the clouds continue to stream overhead. just light showers along the 101. north bay healdsburg near cloverdale as we are going to see sprinkles or scattered light showers on and off north of the golden gate bridge. temperatures in the 50s although 49 now in concord. true rain moves in tonight to tomorrow morning. it should tab taper off by the afternoon. a lot of clouds in the skies. a trigger to get the rain going is located up here so will take some time for it to get here.

in both directions. that's a look at your morning drive. back to you. >> gianna, thank you. american home prices are showing their biggest gains in more than 6 years. some good news there. here to chat about it jason brooks with kcbs and cbsmoneywatch.com. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, frank. good morning, michelle. we have had a lot of good news regarding the housing market over the past several months home prices in october, average home prices were up 6.3% from a year earlier. the biggest year-over-year gain since july of 2006. now, prices were down slightly from september but that's fairly typical after the end of the summer buying season expiring. also prices higher at 45 states. some of this being also backed up this morning by luxury homebuilders which saw revenue increase by 50% to $632 million. apple is expanding its itunes store to 56 more countries starting today. that brings the total to 119.

there's some big countries involved in the latest expansion including india, russia, south africa and turkey. that's a lot of extra people buying those itunes selections. prices will various including 12 cents in india and 40 cents in russia. >> the market is hanging on the "fiscal cliff" talks. market up, nasdaq down, s&p up by 1. and apple shares are down by 1.5%. back to you. >> thank you. smartphones stocking stuffers and tablets under the tree. >> there's probably some kind of gadget on your holiday shopping list this year. and with more on that, cnet editor-at-large brian cooley is live in san francisco with tips to choosing the perfect gift. i was at best buy yesterday and it was sensory overload. you walk in. where do you start? >> reporter: we talked about tablets and things by

themselves over the last few months. here i have them all in one place. i have tablets, ereaders and smartphones. let's put them into perspective. a lot of people are mystified where to start. i want to refresh them on the small tablets. the ipad mini 330 bucks, 8." check the size. it depends to be a big handful for some people who are unable to hold it with one hand comfortably. in that case look at a 7" tablet this google nexus 7 is one of those more handable in one hand. it's $200, less than the mini but jason just mentioned the expansion of itunes into 55 more countries that's the dominant music and media stores. android devices don't do itunes. powerful like the tablet, i like the microsoft windows tablet called the surface. it's a tablet, the touchscreen part. if i turn this on, you can see it's all touch. then this cover down here below it is actually a keyboard as
